Sea water clean-up for South Devon beaches

Highly popular Slapton Sands and Torcross beach on South Devon's stunning coastline have received a huge boost with the completion of the latest project in South West Water's record £1 billion 'Clean Sweep' coastal sewage treatment programme.

As a result of the project, costing around £5 million, a raw sewage discharge from Torcross has been stopped and a proper sewage treatment system provided to meet European standards.

Sewage from Torcross is now transferred to Slapton treatment works through a new sewer system and the treated waste water then returned through another new pipeline to Torcross for discharge into the sea.

The scheme has also enabled the discharge of treated waste water from Slapton, which was previously discharged into the very sensitive water in Slapton Ley, to be combined with the Torcross flows.

South West Water's Project Leader, Mike Court, said: "We are very pleased to have completed our scheme, one of the few remaining in our 'Clean Sweep' programme, well before the spring and summer.

"We have worked very closely with the local community throughout the planning and construction and the work will bring great benefits, both to people today and future generations.
