Water saving cistern device

The Hippo and the Save-a-flush are both designed to save water each time you flush the toilet. These devices are FREE of charge to all domestic customers. Fitting one in a toilet cistern will save water each time you flush.

Which device do you need for your toilet?
Cistern Size Year fitted Hippo or Save-a-flush?
9 litres or more 1991 or earlier Hippo
7.5 litres 1991 - 2001 Save-a-flush
6 litres or less 2001 or later Neither (leave as is)

Possible ways to find out the size or year of your toilet
1.Remove the lid and see if the size is marked anywhere inside.
2.Decide what year the cistern was fitted.
3.Flush the toilet and count how long it takes to flush – i.e. "1 litre; 2 litres; 3 litres... etc". The number you reach when it stops flushing will confirm its size
4.If you have a slimline toilet cistern we recommend that only the Save-a-Flush is used.

save a flush - square

A Save-a-flush will reduce each flush by 1 litre. More recently installed toilets will use 6 litres which is the current standard and should not be reduced further.

Hippo

A Hippo will reduce each flush by about 2.5 litres. Only use a hippo If your toilet was installed prior to 1991.
