Putting the sparkle back from Newton Abbot to Torquay!South West Water is in the middle of a multi-million pound project to improve the quality of the region's drinking water. The programme is called 'Putting the Sparkle Back' and that is exactly what we are going to be doing to the water in the Torquay and Newton Abbot area over the coming months.
As part of this major investment, South West Water will be carrying out two important water mains renovation schemes within Newton Abbot and nearby areas. Work on the town's water distribution mains will start on Monday 5th September and will be ongoing in several locations until December 2005 (Scheme 1). We have previously renovated 17.7km of mains in the Newton Abbot area and this current scheme aims to complete a further 8.6km, providing 7,300 homes with crystal clear drinking water by Christmas at a cost of £750,000. The second scheme is to renovate a major trunk main on the outskirts of Newton Abbot to Great Hill, just outside Torquay (Scheme 2). This section of work will cost approximately £2 million and will put the sparkle back into the water going to over 50,000 properties. From September 5th, both schemes will converge on East Street in Newton Abbot. The trunk main renovation will then continue from the Penn Inn roundabout along St Mary Church Road to the outskirts of Torquay and is scheduled for completion by February 2006. Newton Abbot town centre will NOT BE CLOSED during the work but traffic control systems will be used and where necessary diversion routes will be clearly indicated. There will also be a Customer Liaison Caravan on site at the beginning of the works, to answer any concerns or queries from members of the public. South West Water has already invested over £1million on drinking water quality in the Newton Abbot area and both these schemes together will bring that total up to a huge £3.75million. Such a major investment in drinking water quality can't fail to have a positive effect on the people of Newton Abbot and Torquay, putting a guaranteed sparkle back into their water and hopefully a spring in their step.
