Bob Baty, Chief Executive of South West Water, announced today that he had asked Sir John Evans, the former Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Constabulary to carry out an independent investigation into the circumstances that led to a chlorine container filled with diesel, being delivered to Belvedere Reservoir, Exeter.

South West Water will ensure that all staff and any other personnel engaged by the Company will provide Sir John and his team with their full co-operation.

A separate independent investigation is already underway by the Drinking Water Inspectorate. DWI's role is to assess whether the Company has committed an offence under Section 70 of the Water Industry Act 1991 and if necessary take forward a prosecution for the offence of supplying water unfit for human consumption.

Sir John's report will be provided to the Drinking Water Inspectorate.
