South West Water gets its PAWS stuck into Africa!

South West Water’s scientific manager and Mid Devon resident Chris Underwood, has changed his life and the life of countless others less fortunate, by investing his energy and expertise in PAWS, (Partners for Water and Sanitation); a non-profit initiative set up by the UK government to help ensure that African countries have clean water and adequate sanitation.

"PAWS is now maturing into an effective partnership which is starting to fulfil its considerable potential in delivering real help to people in Africa." The Minister for the Environment Elliot Morley

PAWS are currently working with four African countries - Ethiopia, South Africa, Nigeria and Uganda, where infant mortality is around 1 in 10, and millions of people's lives are at risk everyday from water-borne diseases. South West Water is an active partner in PAWS and was able to give Chris the opportunity to use his 30 years experience working in the UK water industry, to make an invaluable contribution to the work of PAWS in the Benue State, Nigeria.

Unlike in the UK, where many people are fortunate enough to take their water and sanitation for granted, in the Benue State, the population of 3.9 million play out a daily battle to get access to clean water and proper sanitation, often having to travel over 4 km to get to the nearest water hole. Their primitive and limited water distribution system suffers from frequent breakdown or power failure and the local people have very little knowledge on how to run their network; so when machinery breaks down that is often how it stays.

Chris has now made two trips to the Benue State, the last of which was in September 2005, where he and his team gathered information on the systems and worked with local communities to identify their specific needs. Chris was also given the opportunity to conduct specialised training for local people, teaching them how to manage and maintain their own water and sanitation systems. That way, when equipment breaks, there will be members of the community on hand, who actually know how to fix it.

Chris and his team will be returning to Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, in the early spring, where they will continue to develop a plan to make sure the water supply system is working effectively and the local people know how to operate it properly. The work Chris is doing in Makurdi is one of three pilot schemes, which if successful may be extended to 60 more African towns.

"I've had a great 30 years in the water industry and I'm now putting something back into where it really matters and where it will make a real difference to thousands of people. All I'm giving them is the benefit of the knowledge and experience I've been lucky enough to gain here at South West Water." Chris Underwood on his experiences working with PAWS
