Dr Stephen Bird, South West Water's Operations Director, commenting on this year's bathing water quality results, says:
"We are pleased that the company's £1billion investment in new modern sewage treatment systems around the South West coastline has, once again, helped the region achieve an extremely high level of compliance with European bathing water standards.
"We are particularly pleased that Cornwall's bathing waters achieved one hundred per cent compliance. This is the first time and tremendous news for the county which relies on tourism so much.
"This year's high standards have been achieved even though there were some severe storm conditions in the region which can adversely affect the quality of bathing waters when pollution increases through run-off from land into rivers, estuaries and the sea itself.
"Since 1989, South West Water has stopped over 200 crude sewage discharges into the sea and the results of this work are now evident year on year.
"The benefit our work has brought to the local tourist industry is huge, with cleaner beaches and bathing waters a major attraction for millions of visitors and local people."
