Cornish coastal waters are protectedPerranporth's outstanding coastal environment of golden sands and breathtaking scenery in North Cornwall will be protected by a project to upgrade the sewage treatment process.
South West Water will invest £1.8 million to upgrade the sewage treatment works at Perranporth to include secondary treatment. This will safeguard the good quality bathing waters currently enjoyed in the area. ![]() Cornish coastal waters are protected The work is part of the National Environmental Programme to meet the Urban Waste Water Directive and effectively treat waste water flows from an increased summer time population of up to 15,000 people. The treatment works is located on cliff tops south of the village and currently provides comprehensive primary treatment and ultra violet disinfection. The project would involve installing an additional biological treatment process to increase the quality of treated water. The existing outfall pipe through the cliff face would also be upgraded. Site vehicle movements through narrow village lanes will be reduced by investing in a new sludge thickener. Sludge is a by product of the sewage treatment process and after further treatment can be used on agricultural land as fertilizer. Thickened de-watered sludge is more compact and easily transported. To reduce the visual impact and ensure the upgraded site blends into the surrounding countryside the soil bund will be relocated and landscaped to surround and hide all construction. This will prevent the works from being overlooked by walkers on the nearby coastal path. Work will commence in April and is anticipated to take about 7 months to complete. "This essential upgrade will improve the quality of treated water and help protect this outstanding area of natural beauty," said Steve Cross, South West Water's Project Leader. "Better bathing waters will boost the tourist trade and popularity of recreational activities such as surfing and sand yachting along the 3 mile beach at Perranporth". -ENDS- For further information please contact Dina Chandler, Communications Officer on 01392 443021.
