The technical knowledge gained through this qualification will help maintain and operate the 10,000 miles of water mains network in the South West Water region. Les's skills will assist in the management of the region's vast mains renovation programme currently underway to safeguard drinking water quality throughout Devon and Cornwall by 2010.

This year alone South West Water will spend over £30 million to improve nearly 186 miles (300 kilometres) of the region's water mains and put the sparkle back into more South West Water supplies.

Upgrading the water mains network is essential to safeguard water quality and ensure the network is able to meet future demand. Water pressure and flow characteristics are improved and discolouration caused by old corroding cast iron mains is prevented.

The MSc qualification deals with every aspect of management, design, construction and operation of pipe networks. This broad technical knowledge will ensure the company's pipelines and infrastructure assets are used to their full potential and optimise economic and environmental benefit.

MSc skills are acquired through 1000 hours of tuition, coursework, exams and a final dissertation of over 30,000 words along with a presentation challenged by leading academics. This qualification will allow Les to lead and work effectively with other specialists to resolve complex renovation and maintenance issues in the South West.

"My studies focused on key areas of pipeline technology and network management taught by experts in their field," said Les Metcalfe, South West Water's Mains Rehabilitation Manager. "The course was established by industry representatives and provided a highly beneficial insight into the UK pipeline industry and the issues and challenges surrounding this area of essential engineering.

"I would like to thank my family and colleagues whose support and encouragement has been greatly appreciated particularly my wife Michelle, Phil Ashcroft, former East Division Director, Chris Delve, Water Distribution Manager and Dr Stephen Bird, Operations Director".
