Water investment boost for customers and environment"South West Water customers and the local environment have continued to benefit from another large increase in investment in the region's water and sewerage systems", said Bob Baty, South West Water's Chief Executive.
Mr Baty commented on the continuing progress being made by the company to meet Government and European standards for the benefit of customers and the environment at the time of publication of the Pennon Group's preliminary results today. Pennon Group Plc is the parent company of South West Water. ![]() Water investment boost for customers and environment In the reporting year 2002/3, South West Water invested £181 million, up £14 million on the previous year, to improve tap water, river water and bathing water quality in many more areas - building further on work since 1989 when the company was formed. Nearly 200 miles of water mains were replaced or refurbished, and drinking water quality and river water quality reached an all time high, with the South West having more miles of high quality river than any other region of England. Major investment also continued in the record 'Clean Sweep' coastal sewage treatment programme which is now nearing completion. Over 98% of the region's 140 bathing waters reached the European Union's mandatory standard with 84% (71% the year before) meeting the higher guideline standards - a massive boost for the local economy and for the quality of life of people living in the region. "There is always more to do and we will continue to improve services to customers and meet the further environmental standards required of us", added Mr Baty. However the huge progress made during the past 14 years to transform water and sewerage services in the South West is a tremendous achievement and one in which our customers can share for their contribution and patience".
