Region’s renewable energy resources secured

An eight hundred and fifty thousand pound project will secure the long term future for renewable energy generation in the region at the largest hydro plant in England in daily operation on Dartmoor.

The project which started in October 2002 has been commercially funded by South West Water. The refurbishment is being carried out to all eight of the water turbines at Mary Tavy and Morwellham power stations which have been in operation for over seventy years.

The project will enable South West Water to trade Renewable Obligation Certificates to electricity companies who are required to supply 10% of their customer's energy from renewable sources. By buying these certificates companies are able to fund and actively encourage the production of renewable energy.

The refurbishment will safeguard this renewable energy resource which provides energy to the local community through the district network via the national grid. The six turbines at Mary Tavy generate enough electricity to supply 5000 homes - that's enough energy to power the whole of Tavistock.

The hydro energy produced, some eight million kilowatt hours gives an annual saving in emissions from fossil fuels of 6500 tonnes of carbon dioxide, 64 tonnes of sulphur oxides and over 20 tonnes of nitrogen oxides, these gasses are considered to have a major effect on climatic change.

The project involves modernising and upgrading mechanical and electrical components which will ensure the successful automatic operation of the plants for many years.

Plans are also in place to further increase South West Water's green energy generation by installing a new hydro turbine at Totnes to supply electricity to the Littlehempton water treatment works. The four and a half thousand pound project is anticipated to be complete by Spring 2003. The turbine, which is completely concealed within the treatment works site will generate 3 million kilowatt hours each year to power the water works. Any excess green energy will be exported to the national grid.

Green energy is currently generated through hydro at a number of South West Water sites including Roadford and Meldon dam and Crownhill and Avon water treatment works.

"South West Water is completely committed to actively developing environmentally friendly hydro energy resources," said Steve Cryer, South West Water's Hydro Manager. "The company is delighted to be able to reduce fossil fuel emissions and safeguard the region's green energy supplies".
