Over £4 Million invested on Newton Abbot's water main network

South West Water will invest over £4 million in the next 9 months to upgrade and recondition more than 21 km of the water mains network around Newton Abbott.

This is part of a 10 year regional programme to improve the water mains in Devon and Cornwall. South West Water will spend over £30 million in this year alone to improve nearly 400 km of the region's mains and put the sparkle back into south west supplies.

The first section of work started on January 6 to recondition over 9 km of an 18 inch main from Oakes Farm in Newton Abbot to Gallows Gate in Paignton. The process involves removing rust build up in the old cast iron pipe and relining it with a plastic coating. This project is anticipated to be completed by August 2003 at a cost of £1.5m.

The second section of work will commence on January 13 to recondition over 11 km of mains from Tottiford water treatment works to Sandford Orleigh. This will involve replacing two 18 inch mains and two 10 inch mains which are structurally unsound. Work is anticipated to be finished by September 2003 at a cost of £2.8m.

This work is required to safeguard water quality as it is passed down the main. It is also necessary to upgrade the network, improve water pressure and prevent discolouration caused by old corroding cast iron mains.

"This project is essential to ensure a quality water supply is maintained from Tottiford water treatment works", said Andy Dawe, South West Water's Programme Leader. "The works supplies water to Newton Abbot, Teignmouth and Torquay via Gallows Gate, the main service reservoir for the Torbay area".
