New homeowners become waterwise

South West Water's conservation team have sealed their biggest sale ever to supply over 60 of the region's new homeowners with waterwise products helping them save water, reduce their bill and protect the environment from the day they step through the door.

The Pillmere development is unique, it is the first site where developers are required to build water efficient homes as part of the planning consent. Caradon Council require all dwellings to have a water butt and composter before occupation.

South West Water will supply a water butt and composter to over 60 new homes being built by specialist contractor Kier Partnership Homes (formerly Partnerships First) working on behalf of the Housing Association on the new Pillmere site in Saltash outside Plymouth.

Together the water butts have the capacity to store over 11 thousand litres of water. The total amount of water saved by these products will be much more in the future considering 300 butts of water fall on the average roof top every year which is more than enough to supply a garden with rain water which plants prefer.

Composters are the cheapest way of obtaining organic matter which contains essential plant nutrients. Composting organic matter results in fewer landfill sites and mulch seals moisture into the ground so that plants need less watering.

South West Water is required by the industry regulator to encourage water conservation throughout the region. This non profit making activity allows the company to sell waterwise products at bargain prices, often half price or less than at big stores.

Waterwise residents are environmentally friendly. Water conservation reduces the need to build new reservoirs which could destroy wildlife and the rural countryside. Without this development cost future bills could be lower.

South West Water is keen to encourage developers in the region to be waterwise by offering advice on all aspects of water conservation in new buildings.

"Providing conservation products in bulk is the ideal opportunity to encourage developers to build waterwise homes and highlight the environmental benefits involved," said Brian Hooper, South West Water's Water Conservation Manager. "We are pleased to be promoting environmental sustainability in a region where a quality environment is an essential asset to the tourist trade and local economy".
