First sewage system for Ebford
South West Water has recently completed the largest first time sewage scheme in the region for the village of Ebford in East Devon at a cost of nearly one and half a million pounds.
 First sewage system for Ebford
Ebford had no public sewerage system or treatment facilities and waste water was collected in septic tanks or cesspits and leaking effluent could enter the Ebford steam leading to the River Clyst and Exe Estuary. This long awaited project should bring a huge environmental clean up and protect popular recreational waters.
The project involved installing an entirely new sewerage network and pumping station at Odhams Wharf to transfer waste water flows from up to 100 properties for treatment via Topsham to Countess Wear sewage treatment works.
To protect the surrounding environment a directional drill was used to install the pipeline under the River Clyst and under nearby conservation areas including a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Ramsar site. The Ramsar site is a wetland protected by a treaty signed in Ramsar, Iran in 1971. This provides the framework for the protection and wise use of over 1000 designated sites in order to achieve sustainable development throughout the world.
"Villagers and the Parish Council are delighted that South West Water have been able to successfully deliver this essential sewerage system which has been awaited for many years," said Bob Peachey, Chairman of Clyst St George Parish Council.
"Contractors John Mowlem (formerly E. Thomas Engineering) have been brilliant while working on a challenging project in narrow lanes with minimum disruption. This was an admirably performed task during which workmen went out of their way to be helpful".
South West Water completed this essential system to provide Ebford with an waste water treatment facility which will also safeguard the quality of the local environment for future use.
