Plymouth gets even cleaner water
The largest pipe ever in the UK to be relined ..... probably!
South West Water has just completed relining nearly a mile long section of cast iron water main in Crownhill, Plymouth, with an internal diameter of 36 inches - probably the largest pipe ever in the UK to undergo this process.
This essential programme has cost over £350,000 to improve the quality of water transferred from the city's Crownhill treatment works through this section of major trunk main.
The main which was installed in 1924 runs for from Manadon Drive through St Boniface College to supply homes and businesses in Plymouth, Plymstock and Plympton.
For this 36 inch main the relining process involves cleaning the inside and then lining the inside surface using a polymeric material specifically approved for water pipelines.
Crownhill's pipeline work was carried out by a team of eight contractors from Pipeways lining applicators, TJ Brents and South West Water. Liaison with St Boniface College has allowed the improvements to be carried out during the summer holidays preventing disruption to classes and premises.
The first phase of work has taken about 4 weeks to complete and a second phase will start shortly and take a further 4 weeks to upgrade a section of main in Budshead Road.
This year alone South West Water will spend over £30 million to improve nearly 400 km of the region's water mains, putting the sparkle back into more South West water supplies.
"Improving water quality and preventing discolouration through schemes like the 36 inch Crownhill Trunk Main is an essential part of the regional mains improvement programme," said Les Metcalfe, South West Water's Regional Rehabilitation Manager. "We are now two years into a ten year programme to revolutionise the region's water distribution system and protect future supplies."
