Croyde Outfall Pipe Progress

The sea outfall pipe at Baggy Point is currently being extended as part of a £5 million 'Clean Sweep' project to rid Croyde and nearby Georgeham of outdated crude sewage discharges.

Contractors Seacore are carrying out the £190,000 outfall contract. This involves replacing and upgrading 113 metres of the existing pipe and extending it below low spring tide level.

The comprehensive sewage treatment system will secure the improvement to bathing water quality currently experienced at Croyde Bay.

A new waste water treatment works will be constructed at Moor Lane. Sewage flows will receive a high level of treatment before being returned to the environment through the extended Baggy Point outfall which will aid the dispersal of the treated waste water.

The outfall upgrade work will take approximately 6 weeks using a jack up pontoon. The programme is anticipated to be fully operational by the end of March 2003.

Natural stone will be used around the works to ensure the development blends into the surrounding countryside.

"This is a significant milestone in the progress of a project which will provide the first ever modern sewage treatment facility for Croyde," said Andy Hohl, South West Water's Project Leader. "The system will greatly improve the quality of the local environment while encouraging tourists to visit and boost the local economy".
