Croyde receives ‘Clean Sweep’ treatmentSouth West Water’s £1 billion ‘Clean Sweep’ programme will shortly benefit the charming traditional seaside village of Croyde where a comprehensive sewage treatment system will be installed for the first time.
![]() Croyde receives ‘Clean Sweep’ treatment A scheme totalling £5 million will rid Croyde and nearby Georgeham of outdated crude sewage discharges. A new waste water treatment works will be constructed and the existing outfall pipe at Baggy Point will be extended. This scheme is designed to meet the European Urban Waste Water Directive and secure the improvement to bathing water quality currently experienced at Croyde Bay. The project is due to be completed by March 2003 and a local liaison group has been set up to monitor progress on a regular basis. The works being built at Moor Lane will deal with the summer time population equivalent of about 6,000 people and be flexible enough to meet future standards and growth in local and visitor populations. The village road to the new works site will be widened and work on constructing a new footpath will commence next week. Extensive building work using natural stone will also be carried out around the works to ensure it blends into the surrounding countryside. "The scheme will greatly improve the quality of the local environment to benefit local residents", said Andy Dawe, Programme Leader. "A cleaner coastline will further encourage visitors and boost the local economy". - END - For further information please contact Dina Chandler, Communications Officer on 01392 443021.
