The bargain butts to collect rain water which plants prefer and convenient composters - the cheapest way to obtain organic matter -gardeners gold are available at officially discounted prices starting at just £8.

Region wide events will offer discounted product sales, free water conservation advice and gardening tips from local expert Terry Underhill.

The conservation roadshow is a 30 foot vehicle kitted out as a waterwise home to demonstrate efficient water options and give advice on toilets, taps machines and meters.

Waterwise residents are environmentally friendly. Conserving water delays the need to build new reservoirs which could destroy wildlife and the rural countryside, it also helps to keep bills lower. Composting organic matter results in less matter being deposited at landfill sites and mulch seals moisture into the ground so that plants need less watering.

On average we each use 150 litres of water a day over half of this is used in washing and flushing the toilet. With the introduction of free hippo bags the volume of water needed for toilet flushing has been reduced. The average shower uses 30 litres of water per person per day and a bath uses 80 litres so showering is clearly more waterwise than taking a bath.

Saving this vital resource is easy with a few simple methods. Three hundred butts of water fall on the average roof top every year which could supply your garden. Try not to leave hosepipes running instead use a trigger nozzle. Also a bucket can be used for car washing and a watering can in the garden.

In the kitchen try filling the kettle with only the amount of water needed and use a sink bowl for washing up. It is also worth knowing that modern dishwashers use about 16 litres of water per wash compared to older models which use up to 50.

Waterwise advice and free hippo bags can be obtained through the South West Water advice line on 0800 378937. The conservation roadshow events diary can be found on our website at www.south-west-water.co.uk/conservation alternatively contact the advice line.
