World water day for WateraidSouth West Water staff are all set to make a splash for WaterAid on World Water Day. Their city centre stall will recycle mobile phones for charity funds.
On March 22nd Exeter residents and local businesses are invited to donate their outdated mobiles, batteries and chargers to the Bedford Square WaterAid stall from 9am - 1pm. World water day for Wateraid WaterAid is a unique UK charity specialising in providing quality water, proper sanitation and hygiene education in 13 African and Asian countries. For each mobile phone recycled Cellular Reclamation Ltd will give 50 pence to WaterAid. Just 15 pounds will provide someone with clean water, sanitation and hygiene education for a lifetime - that's achieved with just 30 recycled mobile phones. The United Nations General Assembly initiated World Day for Water in 1992 to combat the enormous lack of safe accessible water worldwide. "An estimated 1.1billion people lack access to clean drinking water," said Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the UN. "2.5 billion people have no access to proper sanitation, and more than 5 million people die each year from water related disease - 10 times the number killed in wars, on average each year". Signing the Water Matters Petition available at the WaterAid stall will help urge all EU member governments to agree an action plan for meeting the UN agreed clean water target. This aims to halve the number of people without access to drinking water by 2015. If you cannot visit the WaterAid stall donations can be delivered to South West Water's Reception area at Peninsula House, Rydon Lane, Exeter alternatively contact Chris Martin, the company's WaterAid representative on 01392 443074. - ENDS - For a photograph or further information please contact Dina Chandler, Communications Officer on 01392 443021. |
