Roadford burst main repaired

South West Water is pleased to confirm that the 900 mm water main at Roadford Lake in Devon has now been repaired and a potentially serious water supply problem has been averted.

Teams of engineers and contractors have been working around the clock since last Saturday (10th November) to locate and repair the water main which is some 25 feet below ground level in between two buildings. The seal in a coupling joining two sections of pipe was found to be the cause of the problem and replacement couplings and pipe have now been installed. Normal quantities of water are being pumped to South West Water's treatment works at Northcombe.

Peter Briens, South West Water's Customer Service Director, said today "A combination of support from our customers who used less water during the repairs and our own expertise has helped us overcome what could have been a major supply problem. We constructed temporary overland pipelines, used a fleet of tankers to transport water to vulnerable areas and switched supplies from one source to another".

He continued, "I'm glad to say that things are back to normal, but we couldn't have managed without the help of our customers, our team working to plan and repair the burst, and the media who have helped to relay our messages to our customers. Thank you all."
