As part of this major project, a huge rig has arrived at Torquay harbour in readiness for work to extend the Sharkham Point sewage outfall, a key element of the scheme.

The 30-metre long rig, which can be stood on four 30-metre high legs, will be in the harbour for around a week to enable it to be fitted out. It will then be moved to Sharkham Point for the eight-week long project to extend the existing sewage outfall by about 50 metres.

Seacore Ltd of Cornwall are the contractors for the work which will enable the highly treated effluent from the under construction waste water treatment works at Brokenbury Quarry to be discharged into deeper water from a depth of about 9 metres to 14 metres.

SWW Programme Leader Peter Brookes said: "We are well on track with work to complete the new waste water treatment works at Brokenbury by next spring. Lengthening the outfall pipe will ensure that the effluent, although highly treated and benefiting from ultraviolet disinfection, will be dispersed in even deeper water than at present."
