A 'Clean Sweep' for Sidmouth
Newly-commissioned sewage treatment works for Sidmouth
Waste water flows from residents of Sidmouth are now being treated to high standards at a newly-commissioned sewage treatment works in the town.
Thanks to South West Water's £12 million investment in the new state-of-the-art works at Sidford as part of the company's £1 billion regionwide coastal sewage treatment modernisation programme 'Clean Sweep', Sidmouth's waste water is now receiving full secondary biological treatment. Additionally, the town's sewage flows are receiving year-round Ultraviolet disinfection.
Construction work on the site, located off the A375 Sidbury road, has been carried out over the past two years. Meanwhile a huge new pumping station has been constructed under The Ham to transfer sewage flows from the town to the new works.
SWW Programme Leader Kim Vanstone, who managed the delivery of the Sidmouth scheme, said today: "We're absolutely delighted that the people of Sidmouth are now benefiting from the massive improvement in waste water treatment that this scheme will deliver.
"Previously, Sidmouth's sewage was discharging continuously into the sea off The Ham, with only basic maceration to reduce the size of solids - we are happy to say this is now no longer the case.
"Our scheme will considerably improve the quality of local bathing beaches and bathing waters. The new treatment facilities will be flexible enough to meet new standards and to allow for growth in both the population of Sidmouth and visitors to this beautiful Devon town - and should prove a real tourism boost for the area.."
