Putting the sparkle back into your waterThe sparkle will be put back into the water supplied to thousands of customers living in Mid Devon as a £1.5 million programme of water mains improvement gets underway in the New Year.
![]() Programme South West Water has announced today plans to renovate 35.2 kms (22 miles) of water mains in the town and village centres and surrounding areas of South Molton, Torrington, Chulmleigh, Belstone and Winkleigh. Some existing water mains will be replaced, whilst others will be cleansed of the build-up of corrosion which occurs over a long period of time, and then re-lined with a plastic coating. Both processes will eliminate the problems of discolouration and low pressure still experienced by a number of customers. Since 1990, South West Water has replaced or re-lined 3,500 kms (2,175 miles) of water mains at a cost of around £270 million, and plans to renovate a further 3,000 kms (1,864 miles) throughout the region at a cost of around £240 million by 2010. The work will be carried out by South West Water's contractor Balfour Beatty Utilities Ltd who have been liaising with local councils and other organisations to ensure the work is carried out with the minimum of inconvenience to all concerned.
