Work has finished on the final phase of South West Water's £2 billion Clean Sweep programme at Polperro, near Looe.

Construction of the £5 million scheme, which includes a sewage screening station at Scilly Cove and a 330-metre pumped long-sea outfall, took over a year to complete.

Due to the exposed, coastal nature of the site, the construction of the screening station by South West Water's contractors Dean and Dyball Civil Engineering involved building a temporary steel platform in the sea off the cove and transporting building materials by sea from Par.

Graham Murphy, South West Water's Director of Engineering said: "South West Water has invested £2 billion in the Clean Sweep programme, which has modernised sewage treatment all around the peninsula, removing almost 250 crude outfalls and transforming the quality of the region's bathing waters. The scheme at Polperro is the final piece of the jigsaw."

The scheme is designed to improve sea water quality and provide environmental protection to the area.
