Elysium Great West Run announces free water refills for runners
16th May 2022
The Elysium Great West Run 2022 has announced it is partnering with South West Water to provide free drinking water for runners at this weekend’s event.
The half-marathon event will return this Sunday, 22 May, after its forced postponement in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, and is expected to attract around 4,000 entrants, many of whom will be raising money for local or national charities.
As well as the half marathon race, the event will host a brand new 10km route that takes runners through the heart of Exeter. There is also Community Mile fun run designed to encourage first-time runners, families, friends, colleagues and teams to come together and challenge themselves to get active for a fitter, healthier life.
As part of its support of the event, South West Water will be providing five water stations across the race to allow runners to refill reusable bottles and cups for free, reducing the need for single-use plastics.
The South West Water branded water stations will be positioned at checkpoints throughout the course, see if you can spot one during the race.
Rupert Martin, Elysium Great West Run Event Director, said: “Improving our impact on the environment is key for us. Our partnership with South West Water will help us hugely reduce the amount of single use plastic at the event as well as educate people on the importance of saving water.”
Mark Hillson, South West Water’s Drinking Water Services Director, said: “The Great West Run is a fantastic event which encourages people of all ages and abilities to get active, and we’re proud to support the event. As well as keeping runners happy and hydrated, every refillable bottle and cup used reduces the number of single-use plastics at the event.”
South West Water’s Awesome Water Team will also be in attendance with a whole host of interactive games and challenges for children (and any brave parents!) to get their hands stuck into. You can have a go at rummaging around sewers, navigating an ‘electrifying’ pipe network and helping to ‘stop the block’.
There are also lots of opportunities to get crafty, making your own mini water butt or become an Awesome WaterFit Warrior (top secret masks provided).
