New partnership provides people with disabilities the cha-cha-chance to dance

28th July 2022

An award-winning Plymouth-based dance company is providing classes for people with disabilities thanks to a new partnership.

Known for their fresh and vibrant approach to making dance accessible for all, Exim Dance works predominantly in Plymouth’s communities, focusing on providing high-quality dance and wellbeing opportunities in areas of deprivation.

Exim Dance provides weekly dance sessions to people who are marginalised due to their disadvantages in life such as mental health conditions, vulnerability due to care arrangements, domestic violence, disability and from low-income families affected by drug use.

Through new support provided by South West Water’s Neighbourhood Fund, additional dance sessions will enable young people to express themselves freely while building relationships and confidence.

Laura Nightingale, Artistic Director of Exim Dance Company, said: “We are thrilled to receive this support from South West Water so we can continue our passion of using dance and breaking down the ideological barriers that surround it to help vulnerable people.

“What we deliver is diverse and accessible to all. Our work centres around our core values that anyone who wants to do something can do it. No matter their background.”

Jo Ecroyd, Customer Service Director at South West Water, said: “We are proud to support Exim Dance’s amazing work and the positive impact it has on improving mental health, increasing confidence and self-esteem, and building on its members’ social skills, all while keeping them physically and mentally fit.”
