Apprentice stories

Antony's story

“I was hit hard by corona-virus, having lost my job as an aircraft engineer last February. When I saw the advert for a Laboratory apprentice, I leapt at the chance to join a job that supports my local area and the environment.

“Since starting, I’ve been welcomed whole-heartedly by the friendly staff. Although restrictions have meant that we must socially distance and wear face masks throughout the working day, the lab staff still perform their roles valiantly and work together to overcome the problems these limitations pose.

“Already, I’ve been trained on two analysing instruments, as well as to mix necessary solutions and how to record the results of tests performed. The apprenticeship includes a college course: a level 3 BTEC in Applied Science. One day a week is dedicated to working towards this qualification. I‘m very much enjoying my new role and couldn’t be happier with the way things have turned out. I’m looking forward to a progressive career path with South West Water.”

Jim's story

“Since starting as a Laboratory apprentice at South West Water in November 2020, I’ve had a life-changing experience. During the summer I decided that I wanted a change in career and it wasn’t until this apprenticeship opportunity came up that I found something I felt I’d enjoy.

“All of my colleagues have been nothing but understanding and helpful with anything I do. As I started working here during the middle of the pandemic, I’ve probably faced more difficulties than the average person starting a new job but I’ve settled in well and I look forward to what’s on the horizon.”
