Are my pipes made of lead?

If your property was built after 1970 it is unlikely that you have lead water pipes.

You can check if you have lead water pipes by looking for your internal stop tap (usually found under your kitchen sink) and checking the inside pipe thats connected to it, where the water pipe enters your home. The table below describes different pipe materials and their appearance:

Material Appearance Is it suitable?
Lead Dull grey on the outside
Easily scratched to reveal a shiny silver colour
Dull sound when tapped

Copper Dull brown on the outside

Iron Dark grey or brown and probably rusty
Very hard and not easily scratched
Ringing sound when tapped with a coin

Plastic May be grey, blue or black Yes
