Protecting the environment
Minimising our impact on the world around us and taking steps to protect and enhance it where possible.
The South West is blessed with a unique natural environment that has shaped the culture and lifestyle of the region while providing the focus for a thriving tourism and hospitality industry. You have told us, the environment is of high importance and you expect us to protect it at all times.
We are working to protect our environment by minimising our carbon footprint, improving raw water quality through our ‘Upstream Thinking’ catchment management initiative and continuing to improve biodiversity through our environmental projects.
Our long-term vision is to be an industry leader in protecting the environment. Our SSSI (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) project will have a direct benefit for the people and wildlife in Cornwall and Devon. The project aims to bring our SSSI sites into favourable conservation status by 2020; protecting the most valuable areas of the country for wildlife and geology.
Did you know?
Our restoration of peat bogs on Exmoor has resulted in the bogs holding a third more water. We have restored in excess of 7,568 acres of moorland and implemented improvement schemes at 1,056 farms through our Upstream Thinking Project.
Our goals for 2050
- Improve our energy efficiency and increase renewable energy generation.
- Aim to eliminate serious pollution issues altogether.
- Work with local farmers and landowners to improve the quality of the water in our lakes, reservoirs and rivers.
