So what's the problem?


Every year, tens of thousands of litres of waste fat, cooking oil and grease are poured down sinks by people who don't realise the problems this could cause.

When hot fat, oil and grease cools it forms a solid mass which can build up inside your pipes.

At best you might notice that your sink or dishwasher isn't draining as quickly, but blocked pipes can also cause flooding .This is extremely unpleasant, especially if it happens in your home. It can easily be avoided.


What's the impact?


8,500 blocked sewers

Every year our wastewater team deals with around 8,500 blocked sewers across Devon and Cornwall, which costs about £4.5million to unblock.


£35m to maintain & upgrade

This has an impact on bills, which we're trying to keep as low as possible. Overall, we spend £35million a year to maintain and upgrade the sewerage network.


Food for thought

Did you know that a medium sized turkey produces ¾ pint of fat? But it's not just your Christmas lunch that could be clogging up your drains.

The leftovers from any dish made with or containing fat, oil and grease can block pipes under your sink. Even small amounts of fat, oil, grease and food waste contribute to blocked drains.

How to...Think Sink!

Please follow these easy steps to keep fat, oil and grease out of your pipes by using your Gunk Pot or equivalent container:

You can also buy fat traps from Less Mess





Scrape food scraps and fat off your plates into your bin or food waste recycling.


Use your Gunk Pot or similar container to collect cooled fats, oils and grease from roasting trays and frying pans.


Give plates and pans a quick wipe with kitchen roll or newspaper to remove any liquid fat or grease before putting in the sink or dishwasher.


Empty your full Gunk Pot into your kitchen bin, then wipe it out with kitchen roll ready to reuse. Alternatively, dispose of an equivalent container directly into the bin.
