South West Water is travelling the length of the region to bring water to life for thousands of schoolchildren.
Throughout the last academic year, the company’s Community Engagement Officer, Sophie Moore, visited 76 schools across Devon and Cornwall to inspire over 6,000 schoolchildren with her fun and engaging lessons.
With a focus on showcasing how precious water is, Sophie helps children understand more about where their water comes from, the challenges in storing and treating it, and what small steps they can take at school and at home to conserve water and protect the environment.
Split into five key topics and shaped to fit different students’ needs, each class covers water efficiency, drinking water, wastewater, the environment, and wellbeing, with the key message that water is a precious resource we all need to play our part to protect.
Sophie said: “Travelling the beautiful South West region and seeing all of the kids listen, learn and engage in my lessons is truly rewarding. Knowing that I may just inspire a future generation to continue to save water and have a better appreciation of the work that goes into getting it from the sky to their tap is what gets me up and going each morning.”
A teacher from Mylor Bridge Primary School in Falmouth, where Sophie recently visited, said: “It has been an absolute pleasure welcoming Sophie into our class. She is incredibly efficient, flexible and plans the lessons with our support well in advance – ensuring that her topics work with what we are teaching the children in science already.
“Sophie’s lessons are extremely well delivered and pitched perfectly for our year four students. As well as having great behaviour management of young kids, she always engages each pupil and adds a good helping of fun and humour which the children love.”
There were also many thanks from the year four students at Mylor Bridge, who compiled a scrapbook for Sophie to take home:
