The organisers of the Sidmouth Raft Race have praised South West Water for their help to bring the event back after a seven-year pause.
The race, organised by the Sidmouth Rotary Club, is a famous highlight of the Sidmouth Regatta weekend with participants dressing up to race homemade rafts in the sea.
Held last Sunday, the event attracted homemade rafts of all shapes and sizes, manned by crews in fancy dress.
Before the 500-yard race, entrants were judged on their costumes and crafts by the Chair of Sidmouth Town Council, Hilary Nelson, and Heather Adkin of the Sidmouth Watersports Hub.
Team Kiss, dressed as Black Sabbath, won first place with The Sidmouth Independent Lifeboat team coming in second dressed as old ladies.
Large crowds came out to watch the race and all winners received cases of wine and cash prizes.
Susan Davy, CEO of Pennon, said:
"Our teams live and work in the same communities we serve, so it’s always a real privilege to support much-loved local traditions like the Sidmouth Raft Race. Events like this bring people together, celebrate creativity, and showcase the best of our coastal towns.
“I’m incredibly proud of the support our colleagues gave to help make the race’s return such a success, and we know how important it is to continue backing the communities that mean so much to us all."
David Hodge, President of the Sidmouth Rotary Club, said:
“The race had not been run for nearly 10 years which is what made the return so special for the public in Sidmouth and Sid Valley area. The return of the Raft Race was entirely down to the kindness of South West Water who sponsored the event.
“The crowds came out to witness the resurgence of the event and the area was packed with well-wishers. A really big thank you to South West Water for their support.
“The Raft Race was an excellent example of the company’s commitment and kindness in their support of local communities. We are forever grateful.”
