A swan has been safely returned to the wild after becoming stranded in a storm lagoon at a South West Water site in Exeter. The stunning bird initially arrived at the lagoon with another swan, but when its companion flew away, it became clear the remaining animal was unable to leave the site on its own.
A storm lagoon is a large basin designed to temporarily store excess rainwater during heavy rainfall, helping to reduce flood risk. South West Water colleagues monitored the swan and ensured it had access to food and water while they sought specialist advice on the safest way to help save the animal and return it to its rightful home.
Working alongside local wildlife rescue group, The Swan Squad, teams were able to safely rescue the bird and release it back into the wild where it is now thriving.
Mark Smitheram, Wastewater Treatment Manager at South West Water, said: "The swan quickly became a familiar sight for colleagues working at the site, and we wanted to make sure it was looked after while we found the best way to help.
“We're so grateful to the amazing team at The Swan Squad for their support in safely rescuing and releasing the bird.
“It was great to see it returned back to its natural environment.”
Lianne from The Swan Squad, added: "The swan was checked over, then taken to the local flock.
“Once the swan was released into the water, his mate immediately spotted him and came swimming over. It was a wonderful reunion. We're pleased to have been contacted, and able to help.”
The rescue highlights the care taken by South West Water colleagues to protect wildlife across its sites and the importance of working with specialist organisations to support animals in need.
