If your building a multiple-property household development that will have new road access, you will probably need a new water main.
Likewise, if you're building a non-household property with a new road access, you will also need a new water main.
You have the option of getting this main, and the services to each property, laid by an accredited self-lay provider or by ourselves.
If you need a new connection to a single new property, or in cases where it's only a small number of connections needed, then you can probably connect to an exisiting water main.
Similarly, if you are requiring a new connection in an existing building, you'll be connecting to an existing water main.
New, or replacement, water connections to existing mains must be through us.
There are 6 steps in applying for a new connection.
More details are available in our 'Guide to obtaining new or replacement water connections'.
Payment must be received in advance of any work.
The quickest and most convenient method is to make an online payment by card.
Alternatively you can read our 'how to pay' guide for further payment options.
Please note - payment alone does not automatically trigger the planning of a connection.
You must notify us when you are ready to progress the connection.
Please ensure your pipework has been laid and inspected and all other pre-connection conditions met before you request your connection.

If you’re installing, using or are responsible for maintaining a plumbing system you need to comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 which set out the requirements.
The Water Regulations apply to any plumbing installation that is connected (directly or indirectly) to the mains water supply or intends to have or use one. They are in place to help prevent waste, misuse, undue consumption, erroneous measurement (anything that causes an inaccurate meter reading), prevent contamination and ensure that the water we supply stays safe.
It’s our responsibility to enforce the requirements and check plumbing installations for compliance. You’ll need to let us know by email or in writing of your intention to work on the plumbing system so that we can carry out a compliance inspection.
Water Regs UK (WRUK) is an advisory body that is funded by the water industry to provide advice and guidance on the requirements of the water fittings regulations. WRUK also oversees the water industry approved contractor schemes (plumbers, ground-workers and various installer sectors) and WaterSafe where you can find an approved contractor.

If you’re installing or designing a fire sprinkler system, you’ll need to know about the water pressure in our pipe network and the associated responsibilities.
Water Pressure
We’ll provide a minimum of 7 metres static head, which meets with the requirements of the Water Industry Act 1991, (We can’t guarantee pressure above 7 metres static head) which is the standard for domestic use.
You’ll need to keep in mind the following points:
Responsibilities
Fire sprinkler Designer/Installer
The designer/installer should install the system in accordance with the appropriate British/European standard and comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. There should be no connections from the dedicated fire fighting supply for domestic purposes.
If you choose to install a sprinkler system directly from the mains water supply and we alter the pressure, we are not liable for any failure of the fire sprinkler installation or for the consequences of not installing a storage based system.

If you’re developing a new site and require a new public water main to serve 2 or more properties, please click here.
Self Lay of Public Water Mains
As an alternative to having new mains and service connections installed by us, developers can arrange for the work to be carried out by qualified contractors. This process is known as Self Lay. Please click here for further information.
Employ your own Self Lay Provider to install new water mains to a site and/or connect services to each property. If you require new or replacement water connections to an existing public water main, follow this guide.
On 1 April 2020, we became the appointed water and wastewater company for the Isles of Scilly. This means that we are responsible for existing water and wastewater infrastructure on the islands.
