We’re investing in essential upgrades to the water network serving Uplyme and the surrounding areas as part of the East Devon Mains Replacement Project.
This project represents a significant long-term investment in the local water network and will help ensure a safer, more resilient supply for many years to come.
We’ll be replacing ageing water mains across the Uplyme District Metered Area (DMA). The existing network is largely made up of older cement and cast iron pipes, which have a history of bursts and leaks due to their age. By installing new, modern pipework, we are strengthening the reliability of the network and improving performance for customers.
Why the work is needed
- The current water mains are ageing and prone to bursts and leaks
- Replacing them will significantly reduce future failures and emergency repairs
- The upgrades will support ongoing and future development in the area
- Customers will benefit from improved water quality and more reliable supply
What the work involves
The East Devon Mains Replacement Project includes the installation of approximately 50km of new water mains across seven District Metered Areas, including Uplyme.
Work will take place across highways and, in some locations, private land. Where
possible, we will use trenchless installation techniques such as directional drilling or
pipe bursting to minimise ground disturbance.
In some areas, traditional open-cut excavation will be required. All excavations will be kept to a minimum and reinstated as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Traffic management and access
Some disruption is unavoidable during construction. Temporary traffic management will be required, including road closures and diversion routes in certain areas.
We’ll work closely with the local highways authority to minimise inconvenience and
ensure any diversions are clearly signposted.
Access for residents and businesses will be maintained wherever possible, and
customers will be notified in advance of any work that may affect access.
Benefits of the project
- Reduced risk of leaks and supply interruptions
- Improved drinking water quality
- Increased resilience of the water network
- Infrastructure that supports future growth in the region
Project timeline
The scheme is scheduled to begin during Summer 2026 and is expected to take
approximately eight months to complete.
