Reducing reliance on storm overflows

Providing you with better water quality

We’re committed to reducing reliance on storm overflows, helping to improve water quality in rivers and the sea, especially in bathing waters. Storm overflows work like a safety valve on the wastewater system. They are typically used when heavy rain overwhelms the system.

Finding solutions for each area

To address storm overflow use, we need to find tailor-made solutions for each area. Solutions for Combe Martin include adding a new wet well and installing additional pipes.

Programme of work

Date Activity
Monday 2 February to Friday 13 February   Closure of Glen Lyn car park for civil works.
Monday 17 February to Friday 20 March   Glen Lyn car park will remain closed for phase 2 of mechanical and electrical works.

Separating sewers and installing storage

If we can keep rainwater out of the main sewage system, it’s much less likely that storm overflows will be needed. In January 2025 we installed a new wet well in Combe Martin to increase the storage capacity of the storm overflow, this wastewater can now be treated.
We plan to complete the phase 2 work by March 2026. Once the work is complete the investment should result in improved water quality in the sea and rivers around Combe Martin.

This will provide 12,000 litres more storm storage
