What is BeachWise?

BeachWise is our twice-yearly stakeholder forum focused on bathing water quality and how we communicate this with coastal communities across the South West. We work closely with communities and partner organisations to promote the safe enjoyment of our coasts. Our coastline is one of the region's greatest assets, attracting millions of visitors each year while supporting the communities that call it home.

The forum brings together a wide range of organisations and individuals with an interest in bathing water quality and the coastal environment. We meet twice a year, before and after the Environment Agency bathing water season, which runs from 15th May to 30th September. Our meetings provide an opportunity to share updates, hear from experts, discuss emerging issues and strengthen relationships between organisations working to protect and improve bathing waters across the region.

We currently have representatives from Surfers Against Sewage, Drip Drip Tamar, Friends of the River Dart, Friends of the River Teign, the University of Exeter, the University of Plymouth, DEFRA and many other regional partners and community groups. The diverse range of perspectives creates valuable opportunities for learning, collaboration and constructive discussion on bathing water topics across the South West.

Meetings include presentations, workshops, facilitated discussions and networking opportunities, helping stakeholders share best practice and strengthen partnerships across our region.

Feedback from BeachWise helps inform wider conversations with partner organisations and supports best practice in communicating bathing water information to the public.
