This means building within 3 metres of the centre of the sewer.
This distance increases for larger sewers.
You can find more information in our guidance notes or by visiting our page dedicated to building near a public sewer.
You can complete our sewer connection application form and return it to us by email, the guidance notes contain more information.
You’ll need to arrange for a drain to be laid from your property to our sewer. If you need help in locating the closest public sewer, you can obtain a copy of the public sewerage records by contacting Source for Searches.
We’ll inspect the connection to ensure that it’s been made to the correct standards which you’ll need to pay for and also there will be a charge for each individual property being connected.
During our site survey we’ll assess the amount of work needed to make the connection(s) and show you where you need to bring your supply pipe(s) to.
We’ll also advise what you need to do before we make the connection including: * Laying part of the supply pipe to our specification
- Paying our costs
- Providing a separate supply pipe to each part of the building or property which will be separately occupied
- Meeting regulations
- Obtaining consents from landowners (if necessary)
We’ll then use these details to provide you with a quote and send this within 10 working days of the survey.
There are 6 steps to getting a new or replacement water connection:

There are more details of our process on our new water connection pages which includes important information that you need to be aware of before applying."
You can apply for a new water main if it will serve 2 or more properties which haven’t previously connected to our network (directly or indirectly).
We will ask you (and any other applicants) to pay any difference between our costs in providing the water main and the income we receive from charges for water supplied from the main in each of the following 12 years.
We may also require some financial security from you before doing the work.
We must provide the water main within three months of your agreeing that we do so.
You can find out more here about connecting to our mains.
Yes, pipework and plumbing must comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.
These are designed to stop contamination of water supplies by preventing back-flow, back-siphonage and interconnections of water from other sources.
Each flat will require a metered supply, even if the house was previously unmetered. If the house was previously metered you can either have this disconnected or utilise the supply for one of the flats, ensuring any internal plumbing amendments are made so it only serves one flat.
Usually each flat would have a new connection to our main. However, providing the building remains in single ownership and the flats are leasehold then a single larger diameter connection to our water main which is split internally via a manifold may be possible. This enables an internal meter for each flat or apartment.
More information is available in our Internal Meter Installation Terms and Conditions.
Where the flats are separately owned each will require an independent new metered connection to our main and in this case bills would be issued individually.
We’ll provide you with a quote which will be specific to your connection requirements after we’ve completed a site survey.
The quote will be made up of:
- Connection costs (all work, materials required for us to make connection)
- Traffic management (depending on the location of our water main, there will be costs involved in managing the traffic)
- Infrastructure charges (all properties connecting to our network for the first time will pay these charges).
There’s information here on the new connection process and further details can be found on our Developer Services Charging Arrangement page.
Payment must be received in advance of any work. The quickest and most convenient method is to make an online payment by card.
Alternatively you can read our 'how to pay' guide for further payment options. Please note - payment alone does not automatically trigger the planning of a connection.
You must notify us when you are ready to progress the connection.
Please ensure your pipework has been laid and inspected and all other pre-connection conditions met before you request your connection.
You’ll need to apply for a new connection if you need a temporary building water supply.
There’s more information here on our page for new or replacement water connections.
