We are investing in essential upgrades to the water network serving Chardstock and the surrounding area. This project is part of the wider East Devon Mains Replacement Programme, which will replace around 50km of older mains across seven District Metered Areas.
In Chardstock, we are replacing aging water mains. These older pipes are prone to leaks and bursts, which can lead to supply interruptions and emergency repairs. By replacing them with modern, durable materials, we are helping to secure a reliable water supply for homes and businesses in the area for many years to come.
What the work involves
The work will take place across public highways and private land throughout the Chardstock DMA.
Where possible, we will use modern trenchless techniques, including directional drilling and pipe bursting, to minimise digging and reduce disruption. In some locations, traditional open-cut methods will be needed. Excavations will be kept to a minimum, and all roads, footpaths, and verges will be reinstated efficiently.
Traffic management and access
Some temporary disruption may be unavoidable. Short-term road closures, traffic management or diversion routes may be required for safety.
Access to homes and businesses will be maintained wherever possible. Any work affecting access will be communicated to residents and landowners in advance. Public rights of way and bridleways will remain open with safe access provided.
We will work closely with Devon County Council Highways to minimise inconvenience wherever possible.
Environmental protection
Protecting the local environment is a key part of the project. Trenchless techniques reduce ground disturbance, helping protect hedgerows, mature trees and farmland.
Environmental and ecological specialists will monitor sensitive areas as required. Works near watercourses, including river crossings, will be carefully managed with the necessary permissions in place.
Project timeline
The scheme is planned to start on 16 February 2026 and is expected to take around six months.
Customers in affected areas will receive updates before work starts, and progress updates will be posted on this page throughout the project.
