Clayhanger and Hockworthy

We’re investing in mains renewal to ensure a more resilient supply for the future.

Clayhanger and Hockworthy – Mains renewal

We are investing in essential upgrades to the water network serving Clayhanger, Hockworthy and the surrounding rural communities.

This project represents a significant long-term investment in the local water network and will help ensure a safer, more resilient supply for many years to come.

We are replacing approximately 7km of ageing 3-inch asbestos cement water main, which has suffered repeated bursts in recent years. These bursts have caused unplanned outages, emergency work, and unnecessary disruption for customers, landowners and road users.

By replacing this main with a modern, durable 90mm polyethylene pipe, we are strengthening the reliability.

Why the work is needed

  • The existing water main is old and prone to failure
  • Replacing it will significantly reduce future bursts and emergency repairs
  • Customers will benefit from more stable water pressure and improved water quality.

What the work involves

The work will take place across both highways and private land between Chimney Down Cross, Clayhanger and Hockworthy.

Where possible, we’ll use trenchless installation techniques to minimise ground disturbance.

These modern techniques help reduce environmental impact, protect hedgerows and mature trees, and limit disruption on farmland and rural lanes.

Traffic management and access

Some short-term disruption will be unavoidable and temporary road closures or traffic management will be required at certain points for safety.

Access for residents will be maintained wherever possible.  Public Rights of Way and bridleways will remain open, with safe access provided where works are taking place.

We’re working closely with Devon County Council Highways to coordinate the programme and minimise inconvenience.

Customers and landowners will be updated in advance of any work affecting access to homes, farms or fields.

Environmental protection

Environmental considerations are central to the project, mature trees and hedgerows will be protected in line with conservation guidelines.

Ecological specialists will survey areas near ponds, hedgerows and potential protected habitats as needed.  Archaeological watching briefs will also be arranged where required.

All works near watercourses, including the river crossing near Hockford Cottage, will be carefully managed with the appropriate permissions in place.

Project timeline

The scheme is planned to begin in late 2025.  Exact dates will be confirmed by our principal contractor, Network Plus, customers in the affected areas will receive updates before the work starts.  We will also post updates on this page.

The Customer Liaison Officer is Jacob Armstrong, he can be contacted between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday on 07500 440614.
