Our investment
We are carrying out essential upgrades to the water network in Kilmington and the surrounding area as part of the East Devon Mains Replacement Project.
This is a long-term investment to improve the reliability of the local network and help secure water supplies for years to come.
As part of the scheme, we will replace ageing water mains across the Kilmington District Metered Area (DMA). Much of the existing network is made up of older asbestos concrete and cast iron pipes, which are more prone to bursts and leaks. Installing new, modern pipework will improve performance and reduce the risk of future issues.
Why we’re doing this work
- Ageing pipes are more likely to burst or leak
- Replacing them will reduce the need for emergency repairs
- The upgrades will support future development in the area
- Customers will benefit from improved water quality and reliability
What the work involves
We will install new water mains as part of a wider programme delivering around 50km of improvements across seven District Metered Areas in East Devon.
Work will take place in roads and, in some cases, on private land. Where possible, we will use trenchless methods such as directional drilling or pipe bursting to minimise disruption.
In some locations, open-cut excavation will be needed. We will keep this to a minimum and reinstate surfaces as quickly as possible.
Traffic management and access
Temporary traffic management will be required, including road closures and diversion routes in some areas.
We will work with the local highways authority to reduce disruption and ensure clear signage is in place.
Access to homes and businesses will be maintained wherever possible, and we will provide advance notice where access may be affected.
Benefits of the work
- Fewer leaks and supply interruptions
- Improved drinking water quality
- A more resilient water network
- Infrastructure that supports future growth
Project timeline
Work is due to start on 1 April 2026 and will take around six months to complete.
