If you ever need to turn off your water supply, whether due to a leak, burst pipe or planned plumbing work, it’s important to know where your stop tap is and how to use it.
Taking a few minutes now to locate it could save time and help prevent damage later. It’s a simple step that can make a big difference in an unexpected situation.
There are two types of stop taps (sometimes referred to as stop cocks): external stop taps and internal stop taps.
The external stop tap is usually our responsibility, while the internal stop tap is yours to maintain. Stop taps control the water supply entering your property and can be a real lifesaver in the event of internal bursts or leaks.
They’re also essential if you're planning any maintenance work, such as installing a new bathroom or kitchen.
Did you know not every property has an external stop tap? That’s why it’s important to ensure you have a working internal stop tap for emergencies. If you do have an external one and it’s in good working order, you’re of course welcome to use it.
Our external stop taps are typically located under covers in the footpath or pavement, which look like the examples shown below.
Your stop tap will look a little something like this:

Your stop tap can be located in a number of places. The most common locations, whether you live in a house or a flat, include:
Sometimes stop taps are placed in unusual spots, so if you're unsure where yours is, it's best to call a plumber to help you locate it.
To turn off your water supply, simply turn the stop tap fully clockwise.
Taking just five minutes to walk around your home and locate your stop tap could save you a lot of stress and panic if the worst happens.
