You may benefit from having an external-use or sub-meter if you use a large amount of water externally, for example:
- A very large garden that you water by hosepipe or sprinkler for more than 15 minutes each day
- A garden pond larger than 1 cubic metre or 220 gallons in capacity that you regularly fill or top up
- A swimming pool that you regularly fill or top up, that doesn’t drain into the main sewers
- An automatic garden irrigation system which is used daily for more than 15 minutes
To get one fitted, the cost is £154.00 plus VAT and any other plumber charges if required.

Yes, you can, as long as your tenancy agreement is for more than six months, or if you're on a rolling contract.
We’d recommend you tell your landlord that you're fitting a meter as they'll need to know for future tenancies.

If we can’t install a meter we’ll offer you an assessed charge which is an alternative way of billing you. It's based off the number of people living in the property and we split it into three categories: 1 person, 2 person or multi-occupancy.
