Benefits of being on a meter
The majority of customers will save money by switching to a meter.
Paying only for the water you consume is also the fairest way to pay with over 88% of household customers currently paying by a metered or equivalent charge.
We know that you might be wondering if it’s really worth it, or are concerned that if you switch and don’t save you will not be able to revert to the way you are currently charged. Here’s some facts to help you decide:
- The switch to a meter is free and we will install within 56 days of receiving your application
- If you are a tenant, you don’t need permission from your landlord. We’d recommend you tell your landlord that you're fitting a meter as they'll need to know for future tenancies.
- Our Lowest Bill Guarantee will show you the difference between your metered and unmetered bill
- If you pay more on a meter we’ll refund you the difference annually
- You have two years to decide if it’s for you, and you can switch back at any time during these years
- Having a meter allows you access to our financial help should you need it (subject to other criteria)
Where's my water meter?

Generally we install meters outside of your home in the footpath or front garden. It will sit within a chamber under a small square or rectangular cover and will usually be labelled with ‘meter’ or ‘water’.
Your meter will have a unique serial number which is shown on your bill, so you need to check that it matches the number on the meter.
Is my water meter inside my house?
Sometimes your meter's located inside your house or flat, usually under the kitchen sink or near the internal stop tap.
If you're still unable to find your meter, give us a call so we can advise how we can help.
If we can't fit a meter
Sometimes, because of the location or layout of the pipework at a property, we can't fit a meter. If this happens, you can choose to be put on an assessed charge, which will be calculated based on the number of people in your household.
How much could you save with a meter?
Try our handy calculator to help you work out your water use and whether a water meter would save you money. Charges are based on the 2025/26 charges tariff.
