We’re working with our plumbing partner Aqualogic to help fix leaky loos. You can fix your own loo yourself with our quick guide or book a free appointment with Aqualogic.

Leaky toilets are a major cause of water wasted in the home – up to 400 litres a day.

Many toilet leaks go unnoticed, as it is often just a small trickle at the back of the bowl, this can add hundreds of pounds to metered bills.

How to test for a leaky loo

If you are not sure if your toilet is leaking, you can try this simple test:

  1. Ensure the toilet has not been flushed for at least an hour, so the back of the pan should be dry.
  2. Place a piece of toilet roll at the back of the pan.
  3. If the toilet roll becomes wet, it’s likely you have a leak

How to fix a leaky loo

If you’d like to try fixing your leaky loo yourself, follow these steps:

  • Check inside your cistern:
    • If the water level sits at the tide mark, it’s likely a faulty flush valve (you may need a new outlet washer)
    • If the water level is above the tide mark, it’s likely an inlet valve issue (you may need a new diaphragm washer)
  • Identify your toilet make and order the correct replacement part
  • Follow manufacturer instructions or trusted online videos to fit it
  • Turn off the water supply before starting (using the local or main stop tap)
  • Flush the toilet to empty the cistern
  • Fit the replacement part
  • Turn the water back on and test
